Wherever the weight of vehicles permitted on a street is limited by ordinance and signs and limiting the limitations are posted, it shall be unlawful to operate a vehicle in excess of the weight on the street excepting for the purpose of making delivery or picking up a load; in which case the vehicle may be driven on the street for not more than the minimum distance necessary for the purpose.
