§ 10.03  DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this code, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   AND or OR.  The word AND may be read as OR as AND where the sense requires it.
   BOND.  When a bond is required, an undertaking in writing shall be sufficient.
   COMPUTATION OF TIME.  The time within which an act is to be done shall be computed by excluding the first day and including the last, and if the last day be a Sunday or a legal holiday, that shall be excluded.
   COUNCIL or TOWN COUNCIL.  The Town Council of the Town of Prosperity, South Carolina, including the Mayor and 4 Council members, for a total of 5.
   COUNTY.  The County of Newberry in the State of South Carolina.
   GENDER.  Words importing the masculine gender shall include the feminine and neuter.
   MONTH.  A calendar month.
   NUMBER.  Words used in the singular number include the plural and the plural shall include the singular number.
   OATH, SWEAR, SWORN.  The word OATH shall be construed to include an affirmation in all cases in which, by law, an affirmation may be substituted for an OATH, and in such cases, the words SWEAR and SWORN shall be equivalent to the words AFFIRM and AFFIRMED.
   OFFICERS, AGENTS, THINGS AND PLACES OF THE TOWN.  Unless a contrary intention appears, the officer, agents, employees and other persons, things and places situated in the town or employed by or appertaining to the town or subject to the jurisdiction thereof.
   OWNER.  Applied to a building or land shall include any part owner, joint owner, tenant in common, joint tenant or tenant by the entirety, of the whole or part of the building or land.
   PERSON.  A corporation, firm, partnership, association, organization and any other group acting as a unit, as well as an individual.
   PERSONAL PROPERTY.  Includes every species of property, except real property, as defined in this section.
   PRECEDING, FOLLOWING.  Next before and next after, respectively.
   PROPERTY.  Real and personal property.
   REAL PROPERTY and REAL ESTATE.  Land, tenements and hereditament.
   ROADWAY.  The portion of a street improved, designed or ordinarily used for vehicular traffic.
   SIDEWALK.  Any portion of a street between the curb line, or the lateral line of a roadway where there is no curb, and the adjacent property line intended for pedestrian use.
   SIGNATURE or SUBSCRIPTION.  Includes a mark when the person cannot write.
   STATE.  The State of South Carolina.
   STREET.  Avenues, boulevards, highways, roads, alleys, lanes, viaducts, bridges and approaches thereto and all other public thoroughfares in the town, and shall mean the entire width thereof between opposed abutting property lines.  It shall be construed to include a sidewalk or foot path, unless the contrary in expressed or unless the construction would be inconsistent with the manifest intent of the Town Council.
   TENANT or OCCUPANT.  Applied to a building or land, shall include any person who occupies the whole or part of the building or land, whether alone or with others.
   TOWN.  The Town of Prosperity in the County of Newberry and the State of South Carolina, except as otherwise provided.
   WRITING.  Printing and any other mode of representing words and letters.
   YEAR.  A calendar year.
