(a) Every dwelling unit within the City shall have one (1) approved smoke detector installed outside each sleeping area, in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, and an additional detector on each additional story of the family living unit, including basements and finished attics, but excluding unfinished attics and crawl spaces. In new construction, a smoke detector shall also be installed in each sleeping room.
(b) In "split level" dwelling units which contain adjacent levels with less than one (1) full story separation, the installation of a smoke detector on an upper level shall suffice for the next adjoining lower level, unless there is an intervening door between the adjacent levels, in which case a smoke detector shall be installed on each level.
