7-14-6: BACKFLOW PREVENTION ASSEMBLIES REQUIRED:
   (A)   No water service connection to any premises shall be installed or maintained by the city unless the water supply is protected as required by this code, sections 7583 through 7605 of the California code of administrative regulations, and other applicable state laws and regulations. The city shall discontinue service of water to any premises in the following situations: 1) if a backflow prevention assembly required by this code is not installed; 2) if a backflow prevention assembly has been removed or bypassed; or 3) if an unprotected cross connection exists on the premises. Service will not be restored until such condition or defects are corrected.
   (B)   In the case of premises having an auxiliary water supply that is not or may not be of safe bacteriological or chemical quality and that is not acceptable to the director as an additional source, the property owner shall protect the public water system against backflow from the premises by installing an approved backflow prevention assembly in the service line.
   (C)   In the case of a premises having: 1) internal cross connections that cannot be permanently corrected or controlled; 2) intricate plumbing and piping arrangements where entry to all portions of the premises is not readily accessible for inspection purposes; or 3) a condition that in the opinion of the director constitutes a hazard to health, the property owner shall protect the public water system against backflow from the premises by installing an approved backflow prevention assembly in the service line.
   (D)   The type of protection that shall be provided to prevent backflow into the approved water supply shall be commensurate with the degree of hazard that exists on the premises. The types of protective assembly that may be required (listed in an increasing level of protection) include:
      1.   Double check assembly (DC);
      2.   Reduced pressure principle backflow prevention assembly (RP); and
      3.   Air gap separation (AG).
The customer may choose a higher level of protection than required by the city. Situations shall be evaluated on a case by case basis and the appropriate backflow protection shall be determined by the city. (Ord. 1661, 2-25-2014)
