(A) Material standards. For the purpose of this section, the following material standards apply.
(1) Clay. All clay pipes shall conform to ASTM standard specifications for clay sewer pipes.
(2) Poly vinyl chloride (PVC). All PVC gravity sewer pipe shall conform to the requirements of the latest revision of ASTM Specifications D 3033 “Type PSP Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) Sewer Pipe” and fitting of the ASTM Specifications D 3034 “Type PSM Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) Sewer Pipe and Fittings.” PVC pipe minimum wall thickness shall be SDR 35.
(3) Cast iron soil pipe joints. Said joints shall be caulked with hemp or jute and sealed with molten lead, or a plastic collar shall be used.
(4) Elastomeric gasket joints. The critical sealing dimensions of the bell, spigot and gasket shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard dimensions and tolerances. The elastomerics compound shall comply in all respects with the physical requirements specified in ASTM D1869, C391 or C443. The gasket shall provide an adequate compressive force against the sealing surfaces of the bell and spigot so as to effect a positive seal under all combinations of the joint tolerances. The gasket shall be the only element depended upon to make the joint flexible and watertight.
(5) Solvent cement joints. The dimensions of the socket for the cemented joint shall conform to ASTM standards. The solvent cement shall meet the requirements of ASTM D2564. The assembly shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended procedure or with ASTM Recommended Practice D2855.
(B) Joining systems.
(1) General. The joint shall provide a permanent seal against exfiltration and infiltration.
(2) Clay tile. Clay tile bell connections shall be sealed with acid and alkaline resistant material.
(3) Cast iron soil pipe joints. Said joint shall be caulked with hemp or jute and sealed with molten lead, or a plastic collar shall be used.
(5) Solvent cement joint. The dimensions of the socket for the cemented joint shall conform to ASTM standards. The solvent cement shall meet the requirements of ASTM D2564. The assembly shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended procedure or with ASTM Recommended Practice D2855.
(C) Grade. All sewers shall have a fall of at least one-eighth inch to each linear foot unless otherwise authorized by the Inspector.
(D) Trenching and backfilling. All excavations shall be open trench work unless authorized by the Inspector. The base of the trench shall be formed to prevent settlement of pipes. Bell holes shall be cut for all pipe to provide ample space for pouring of joints. Backfilling on municipal rights-of-way shall be laced in layers and solidly tamped or packed up to two feet above the pipe. Backfilling shall not be done until final inspection by the Inspector.
(E) Inspection and supervision. The Sewer Inspector shall inspect all house drains, sewer connections and excavations during installation.
(F) Installation. Only licensed master plumbers are allowed to repair, replace or connect to the sewer system.
(G) Specification. All drains below grade shall be constructed of clay, cast iron soil pipe, PVC or A.B.S. All types of sewer pipe service connections authorized by ordinance shall be at least four inches in diameter to provide required capacity where specified.
