(a) Walls surfaces that have not been painted should remain unpainted.
(b) If a brick facade was originally painted, a soft brick was probably used in construction. These surfaces should remain painted.
(c) Generally, stone terra-cotta brick or tile should not be painted.
(d) Sandblasting and other abrasive cleaning methods should not be undertaken because they damage the structure.
(e) Masonry repair such as repointing should use an approved mortar mix and method, including proper routing of existing joints to allow for a good bond and striking profile.
(f) Silicone waterproof coating is not an appropriate treatment.
(g) Peeling or blistering paint should be wire brushed or scraped off. The surface to be painted should be clean and dry. If a painted surface has cracks or fissures, the old paint should be removed before new paint is applied. Caulk joints between wood trim and masonry before painting.
