(a) Retain the original window opening proportions. If existing ceiling has been lowered, pull the dropped ceiling back from the original window.
(b) If possible, save and restore the original windows and frames. Replace missing, rotting or broken sash, frames, mullion and muntins with similar material.
(c) If the original window openings have been altered, restore them to their original configuration and detail. Avoid blocking or filling in window openings, which are critical to facade design and natural light and ventilation.
(d) Avoid storing material directly in front of windows. Wash upper story windows regularly and install curtains or other suitable devices to give a “lived-in” appearance.
(e) Avoid substituting one type of operable sash for another.
(f) Avoid the use of shutters except where the clear evidence indicates their historic presence. If shutters are used, they should be functional.
