When stop signs are erected, as herein provided, at or near the entrance to any intersection, every driver of a vehicle shall stop the vehicle at the sign or, if a crosswalk or stop line is painted clearly on the pavement, at a clearly marked crosswalk or stop line, before entering the intersection, except when directed to proceed by a police officer or traffic-control signal.
