§ 33.078 SICK TIME.
   (A)   The city realizes that on occasion employees will need to be away from work due to personal or family illness. As a benefit, we provide regular, full-time employees up to five days of paid sick leave per year. Sick days can be carried over for a maximum accumulation of ten days Fire Department employees will receive up to five days of paid sick leave per year. These employees can carry over one sick day for a maximum accumulation of six days. These days will not be paid to an employee upon termination. Temporary and part-time employees do not receive sick leave. Employees must log sick leave on a half-day basis, accounting only for full days away from work.
   (B)   Sick leave does apply to regularly scheduled doctor appointments and should be used on days when either the employee is ill or an immediate family member is ill. Employees may be required to present a doctor’s certificate to have the absence approved. Due to shift scheduling of the City Fire Department, a firefighter who uses a sick day will then be required to submit a doctor’s excuse if unable to return to work on their next scheduled shift day.
   (C)   Short-term disability benefits are provided by the city for all full-time employees regularly working 35 or more hours per week. This benefit pays 80% of weekly earnings, for a duration of up to 50 weeks, for qualified individuals. All short-term disability benefits shall be governed by the city’s Short-Term Disability Policy, which are hereby incorporated by reference. For specific information on this policy please contact the Human Resources office.
   (D)   Employees are allowed up to three unexcused absences without leave days within their career. A fourth unexcused absence without a leave day may result in termination. Any absence without a leave day requires a doctor’s excuse from the QuadMed contracted physician to substantiate the missed time. If the clinic is not open, the city reserves the right to send you to its contracted physician; if this is deemed necessary it will be your responsibility to sign a release form to access these records.
