(A) The city believes that you should have opportunities to enjoy time away from work to help balance your life. Therefore, we provide full-time employees with vacation time; part-time and temporary employees are not eligible for vacation time. Employees become eligible for vacation time after completion of one year of employment. Vacation time accrues each year on the employee’s anniversary date.
(B) Vacation time for city employees is accrued according to the following schedule:
Vacation | |
Staff and Support (excludes Fire Department employees)
1 to 4 years | 10 days |
5 to 10 years | 15 days |
11 to 15 years | 20 days |
16+ years | 25 days |
Fire Department only (due to shift scheduling)
1 to 4 years | 5 days |
5 to 10 years | 8 days |
11 to 15 years | 11 days |
16+ years | 13 days |
(C) Carryover and payment of unused vacation time.
(1) City employees, excluding Fire Department employees, may carry over into the next calendar year up to five days of vacation time. If you have unused vacation in excess of five days you must forfeit it. You will not be compensated for unused vacation time if you resign or are terminated.
(2) Fire Department employees may carry over into the next calendar year up to three days of vacation time. If you have unused vacation in excess of three days you must forfeit it. You will not be compensated for unused vacation time if you resign or are terminated.
(D) Scheduling and requesting vacation time. As you would expect, time-off schedules are dictated by workload demands; we must ensure that we are appropriately staffed in order to meet business needs. We will make every attempt to accommodate your time-off request, but your manager will determine preference; generally, earlier requests will receive first consideration. Employees may take vacation in half- or full-day increments.
