(a) Materials; Design; Approval. All wall signs for which a permit is required under this chapter shall have a surface or facing of incombustible noncorrosive material. However, combustible structural trim may be used thereon. Every wall sign, including the frames, braces and supports thereof, shall be designed by a structural engineer or manufacturer and shall be approved by the Building Commissioner if it is in compliance with the Building Code of the Village and by the Electrical Inspector if it is in compliance with the Electrical Code of the Village.
(b) Location; Placement. No wall sign shall cover, wholly or partially, a wall opening, or project beyond the end or top of the wall to which it is attached.
(c) Wall signs shall be allowed only on walls facing road frontage or other commercial uses. Wall signs shall be limited in size to one and one-half square feet in area for each lineal foot of wall facing the road frontage or other commercial use, with no single wall sign to exceed 120 square feet in area. There shall be no more than one wall sign per separate commercial unit within a multi-tenant building, with the area of the sign for each commercial unit being subject to the same size limitations as set forth above, as measured for each commercial unit, except that a corner commercial unit may have two wall signs, one on each exterior wall of said corner unit, provided that both exterior walls face a road frontage or another commercial use. In no case may a wall sign be within five feet of another sign or closer than three feet to the edge of the unit’s horizontal boundary.
(d) Extension from Wall. The front facing of a wall sign shall not extend more than ten inches beyond the surface of the building to which it is attached.
(e) Obstructing Openings, Etc. No wall sign shall be erected, relocated or maintained so as to prevent free ingress to or egress from any door, window or fire escape.
(f) Bracing; Support. All wall signs shall be safely and securely attached to the building wall by means of noncorrosive metal anchors, bolts or expansion screws of not less than three-eighths of an inch in diameter embedded in such wall at least five inches. However, such signs may rest in, or be bolted to, strong, noncorrosive heavy metal brackets or saddles set not over six feet apart, each of which shall be securely fixed to the wall as provided herein. In no case shall any wall sign be secured only with wire, strips of wood or nails.
