1480.08 GROUND SIGNS.
   (a)   Fastening Characters. All letters, figures, characters or representations in cut-out or irregular form, maintained in conjunction with, attached to or superimposed upon a ground sign shall be safely and securely built or attached to the sign structure.
   (b)   Maximum Surface Area and Number. All ground signs for which a permit is required under this chapter shall have a surface area or facing less than fifty square feet in area. There shall be no more than one ground sign per 150 lineal feet of road frontage on each lot with a commercial or industrial use, with the exception that for those commercial or industrial lots with frontage on two or more public roads, there may be one ground sign per lot side with public road frontage.
   (c)   Height Limitation; Projection.  No person shall erect a ground sign whose total height is greater than ten feet above the level of the street on which the sign faces, or above the adjoining ground level, if such ground level is above the street level. No portion of a sign shall extend beyond the property line.
   (d)   Proximity to Other Ground Signs.  No ground sign shall be nearer than fifty feet from any other ground sign.
   (e)   Protection of Posts, Anchors and Bracing.  All posts, anchors and bracing of wood of ground signs shall be treated to protect the same from moisture by creosoting or other approved method, when such a post, anchor or bracing rests upon or enters into the ground.
   (f)   Maintenance of Grounds.  All ground signs and the premises surrounding the same shall be maintained by the owner thereof in a clean, sanitary and inoffensive condition, free and clear of all obnoxious substances, rubbish and weeds.
   (g)   Real Estate Signs.  This chapter does not apply to non-illuminated real estate signs not exceeding eight square feet in area which advertise the sale, rental or lease of only the premises upon which such a sign is located, except that not more than one real estate sign shall be erected at one time and the sign must be placed not nearer than fifteen feet from a lot line of the advertised property. Upon sale, rental or withdrawal of the property from the market, the sign must be promptly removed.
   (h)   Multi-Tenant Ground Sign. "Multi-tenant ground sign" means a freestanding ground sign that shall take the place of individual ground signs for businesses on any lot within a Business District that is being used for more than one commercial use. Any such multi-tenant ground sign, shall comply with all of the provisions of this Section, except as follows:
      (1)   No more than one multi-tenant ground sign shall be allowed on each street abutting the property.
      (2)   A multi-tenant ground sign shall be used solely to identify the shopping center shopping area, or the businesses conducted therein.
      (3)   The maximum area for a multi-tenant ground sign shall not exceed 100 square feet, and the maximum height for such sign shall not exceed ten feet.
      (4)   No ground sign(s) other than multi-tenant ground sign(s) shall be allowed on any lot within a Business District that is being used for more than one commercial use.
