The fire department officer in command at any fire, or any fireman designated by him, may exercise the powers and authority of a policeman in directing traffic at the scene of any fire, or where the fire department has responded to any emergency call, for so long as the fire department equipment is on the scene, in the absence of or in assisting the police.
