Wells may continue to exist and be maintained even though a source of municipal water is available to premises upon which a well is located or is desired to be located, and nothing herein or hereinbefore contained shall be construed to prohibit the operation of wells, provided, that the wells shall not be connected directly or indirectly to the municipal supply of water, and the well water shall not be permitted to be commingled with the municipal water supply.
