§ 37.20  ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF.
   (A)   Class title. Assistant Fire Chief.
   (B)   Characteristics of class. Under general supervision, assists the Fire Chief in planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the firefighting, fire prevention emergency rescue and code enforcement activities of the city; and does related work as required.
   (C)   Examples of duties. Assumes the responsibility and duties of the Fire Chief in his or her absence. Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of all equipment. Assists the Fire Chief in the daily operation of the Department. Responds to all fires and supervises operations in the Chief's absence. Makes regular inspections of personnel, quarters, alarm boxes, firehouses, and similar items for efficiency and disciplinary purposes.  Assists in maintaining discipline and training standards.  Instructs firefighting personnel in the proper care and operation of apparatus and equipment. Assists in the preparation of purchase specifications. Requisitions supplies and equipment needed.  Maintains records and makes reports orally and in writing.  Participates in firefighter training activities. Assists in developing  long-range personnel and equipment plans for the department.
   (D)   Minimum qualifications.
      (1)   Training and experience.  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED) supplemented by four years of progressively responsible experience in firefighting and fire prevention work, including one year of supervisory experience.
      (2)   Special necessary requirements.
         (a)   Successful completion of required training.
         (b)   Possession of a valid driver's license as issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
         (c)   Certification as Emergency Medical Technician.
         (d)   Ability to pass a physical examination.
      (2)   Special knowledge, skills and abilities.  Thorough knowledge of modern firefighting practices, principles, and procedures in firefighting and prevention, emergency rescue and code enforcement. Thorough knowledge of departmental policies, rules and regulations, and of the geography of the city.  Thorough knowledge of first aid principles and skill in their application.  Thorough knowledge of fire alarm systems. Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate skilled personnel.  Ability to analyze situations quickly and to adopt an effective course of action with regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances. Instructional ability. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with other employees, officials and the public.  Initiative. Resourcefulness. Dependability. Firmness. Sound judgment. Integrity.
