§ 37.19  FIRE CHIEF.
   (A)   Class title. Fire Chief.
   (B)   Characteristics of class. Under general direction, plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates all firefighting, fire prevention, emergency rescue and code enforcement activities for the city; and does related work as required.
   (C)   Examples of duties. Plans operations. Assigns personnel and equipment. Evaluates needs and makes recommendations for the purchase of apparatus and equipment. Submits information relating to the activities for the preparation of the annual budget. Maintains necessary departmental records. Directs training programs.  Directs maintenance of fire buildings, grounds and equipment. Oversees discipline and personnel. Assumes responsibility for the maintenance of clear, concise permanent records. Responds to major alarms and personally directs firefighting operations. Attends all City Council and other work related meetings.
   (D)   Minimum qualifications.
      (1)   Training and experience.  Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent (GED) supplemented by five years of progressively responsible experience in firefighting, fire prevention, emergency rescue and code enforcement work, including supervisory experience.
      (2)   Special necessary requirements. 
         (a)   Successful completion of required training.
         (b)   Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
         (c)   Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician.
         (d)   Ability to pass a physical examination.
      (3)   Special knowledge, skills and abilities. Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and equipment employed in modern firefighting, fire prevention, emergency rescue and code enforcement. Extensive knowledge of fire hazards, toxic materials and explosions. Ability to plan, assign, coordinate and supervise the activities performed by employees in varied firefighting activities. Ability to evaluate personnel, to maintain the discipline and respect of subordinates and to command personnel effectively. Ability to initiate, plan, and carry out programs in administration, in-service training, and prevention. Ability to speak and write effectively.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials and the general public. Initiative.  Dependability.  Firmness.  Resourcefulness.  Sound judgment. Integrity.
