In the event of a death in the immediate family, an employee will be granted a three-day leave of absence with pay. For such purpose, the immediate family shall be considered to be a father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, child, mother-in-law, father-in-law, daughter-in- law, son-in-law, grandchild, grandparent, stepchild or other close relative living in the same household. If a death of a member of the immediate family occurs in another community at a distance which requires travel by the employee of at least 250 miles one way, the employee will be granted a five-day leave of absence with pay. A one-day absence with pay shall be allowed any such employee attending the funeral of a relative not in the immediate family and not living in the same household. A one-day absence with pay shall also be allowed any such employee attending the funeral of a brother-in-law, sister-in-law, or step-parent. Notification of circumstances permitting a leave of absence under this section shall be given to the department manager, or may be given to the City Administrator or Mayor in the absence of the department manager.
Upon approval by the City Administrator or Mayor, employees may use sick leave to supplement funeral leave, and where no sick leave is available, other forms of paid leave may be used.
