(a) Dual voltage smoke detectors shall be used in all new dwellings with the primary power derived from the building wiring when such wiring is served from a commercial source. When primary power is interrupted, the detectors shall receive power from a battery. Wiring shall be permanent and without a disconnecting switch other than those required for over-current protection.
(b) Battery-operated smoke detectors may be used in existing structures where connection to the building wiring is impractical.
(c) The batteries for all smoke detectors must be replaced once a year or as recommended by the manufacturer. All batteries must be marked showing the date installed. Each smoke detector shall be tested at the time the batteries are replaced. The owner is responsible for maintaining a record of such tests. Each smoke detector found to be inoperable shall be repaired or replaced immediately.
(d) The power module for all self-powered carbon monoxide detectors must be replaced as recommended by the manufacturer. The power module must be marked showing the date installed. Each carbon monoxide detector shall be tested at the time the power module is replaced. The owner is responsible for maintaining a record of such tests. Each carbon monoxide detector found to be inoperable shall be repaired or replaced immediately.
