(A) Code number. 1004.
(B) Class title. Backhoe operator/laborer.
(C) Characteristics of the class. Under direct supervision, performs skilled, semi-skilled and routine maintenance work; and does related work as required.
(D) Examples of duties. Repairs water line breaks, rods sewer lines, digs out sewer lines; patches and repairs streets and roads; reads water meters; mows and trims grass along right-of-way, city buildings, and structures; makes, erects, and repairs street signs; performs minor mechanical work; cleans city buildings; washes trucks and other equipment; may inspect sewer lines and the like upon direction of the Superintendent; may make daily checks of water and sewer plants and records pertinent information upon direction of the Superintendent; uses pick and shovel when needed.
(E) Position qualifications.
(1) Training and experience. Graduation from high school or its equivalent supplemented by two years of responsible experience in use of equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoe; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to effectively perform the duties of the position.
(2) Special knowledge, skills, and abilities. Considerable knowledge of standard safety rules and practices; ability to perform heavy routine manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather and environmental conditions; ability to drive trucks and operate backhoe and other equipment; valid driver’s license and a driving record which would be acceptable on the city’s insurance policy; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; stamina and excellent physical condition; some mechanical ability; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public.
