§ 4. ASSISTANT FIRE CHIEF.
   (A)   Code number. 6002.
   (B)   Class title. Assistant Fire Chief.
   (C)   Characteristics of the class. Under general administrative direction, provides the Chief with top-level line and staff assistance; serves as Fire Chief in his or her absence; does related work as required.
   (D)   Examples of duties. Assists in developing the objectives, plans, programs, and procedures of the Fire Department; reviews and makes recommendations to the Fire Chief for the strengthening of policies and programs; assists in carrying out the operations of the Department; handles administrative details of the Department such as schedules, purchase requisitions, monthly reports, filing, and correspondence; counsels with subordinates and serves as Chief in his or her absence; assists in promoting effective public relations.
   (E)   Position qualifications.
      (1)   Training and experience. At least 200 hours of special firefighters’ training supplemented by at least three years of responsible Volunteer Fire Department participation; or any combination of education, training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform effectively the duties of the position.
      (2)   Special knowledge, skills, and abilities. Considerable knowledge and application of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of modern fire department administration, organization, and operation as related in field activity; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other officials, and the general public; administrative, supervisory, and analytical abilities; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; initiative and resourcefulness, tact, firmness, integrity, impartiality, patience, sound judgment; completion of the required hours of courses and training in firefighting procedures; valid operator’s license; meets all state requirements as provided in KRS Chapter 95.
