1484.06 ENTRANCE CANOPIES.
   (a)   Entrance Canopy Defined. For the purpose of this Building and Housing Code, “entrance canopy” means a temporary canopy or hood, the purpose of which is to provide shelter for persons when entering or leaving the building which it serves, and the covering of which is of canvas or other pliable material.
   (b)   Limiting Dimensions.
      (1)   The maximum width of any entrance canopy shall be eight feet. No part of the horizontal supporting framework shall be less than eight feet above a public sidewalk and no part of such canopy shall be more than twelve feet above a sidewalk or walk level.
      (2)   The minimum clearance under any canvas part of an entrance canopy shall be six feet, eight inches.
      (3)   Side curtains of canvas may be attached to an entrance canopy, provided the necessary width of the traveled public sidewalk is not obstructed thereby. The necessary traveled width shall be established by the Director of Public Service, with due consideration of the density of travel over the sidewalk.
   (c)   Authorization and Location. Entrance canopies shall not be erected unless authorized and located as follows:
      (1)   With reference to the Zoning Code, entrance canopies may be erected to serve multifamily units and apartment houses as provided in the Zoning Code.
      (2)   Entrance canopies without posts and supported by only a building shall comply with the provisions of this Building and Housing Code which apply to fixed awnings, except as herein restricted and except that the covering shall be of canvas or other pliable material.
      (3)   Entrance canopies shall not project beyond the building line or the street line, but they may be constructed beyond the building line when authorized by the Superintendent of Building and Zoning Inspection, and beyond the street line if authorized by the Director of Public Service, provided they are authorized only for affairs of a public nature and for special events, such as weddings, receptions and as directed by the Mayor. Such canopies shall be erected for periods not to exceed fourteen days, unless authorized by a resolution of Council and approved by the Mayor. No permit fee shall be charged for entrance canopies which remain erected for not more than fourteen days. For entrance canopies erected or extending over a public thoroughfare, except as permitted in paragraph (c)(2) hereof, the Director of Public Service may require a bond as required in Section 1426.23 for street obstructions. No post or other support for such a canopy shall be placed nearer than two feet to the vertical plane passing through the curb line.
   (d)   Construction.
      (1)   The framework of entrance canopies shall be either of noncorrodible metal or of metal properly protected against corrosion, or be of other noncombustible material approved for their purpose.
      (2)   The canopies shall be adequately constructed, anchored, tied and braced so as not to be or become a hazard to life or property.
      (3)   Covering for the canopies shall be approved flame-resistant canvas or other similar pliable and flame-resistant material.
      (4)   Entrance canopies shall not be permitted to remain erected under conditions of sleet or snow which would render the same unsafe.
