To be eligible for appointment, the Superintendent of Building and Zoning Inspection shall be a registered architect, registered engineer, Building Inspector or Superintendent of Construction, within the last ten years, with at least five years of experience in building construction. He or she shall be generally informed on the quality and strength of building construction, on good practice in fire prevention, on the accepted requirements for safe exit facilities and on the proper installation of plumbing and sanitary conditions of occupants of buildings. He or she shall be in good health and physically capable of making the necessary examinations and inspections of buildings in the course of construction. He or she shall not have any interest whatever, directly or indirectly, in the sale or manufacture of any material, process or device entering into or used in or in connection with building construction.
The Administrative Officer may appoint an Assistant to the Superintendent of Building and Zoning Inspection, subject, however, to confirmation by a majority vote of the members of Council. The Assistant to the Superintendent of Building and Zoning Inspection shall be a part-time employee, shall work under the direction, supervision and control of the Superintendent, shall be in the unclassified service and shall work a maximum of ten hours per week at such compensation as Council shall from time to time establish.
