143.01 CREATION, COMPOSITION AND APPOINTMENT.
   (a)   There is created a regular police force for the Village, which shall consist of a Police Chief as provided by Ohio R.C. 737.15, and deputy marshals designated as patrolmen, all of whom shall be appointed by the Mayor, with the advice and consent of Council and subject to its confirmation.
   (b)   There is hereby established the position of sergeant in the Police Department of the Village. The job of sergeant shall be a supervisory position. The sergeant will report directly to the Police Chief. The responsibilities of sergeant shall be those determined by the Police Chief and those set forth in any Police Department policy manual adopted by the Police Department.
      (1)   Any person appointed to the position of sergeant shall initially be appointed for a six month probationary period, which probationary period may be extended at the discretion of the Police Chief with the concurrence of Council.
      (2)   Any person appointed to the position of sergeant who is later removed from the position and remains employed by the Village as a patrolman shall be paid as a patrolman in accordance with the pay scale for patrolmen then in effect.
