§ 1-5-4 MAYOR; POWERS AND DUTIES.
   The Mayor shall perform all such duties as are or may be prescribed by law, or by the ordinances of the city, and shall take care that the laws and ordinances are faithfully executed; he or she shall have the general supervision and control of the police, subject to any and all orders of the City Council and shall see that all police officers are prompt and faithful in the discharge of their respective duties, and from time to time shall take such measures as he or she may deem expedient for the preservation of peace and good order, and the enforcement of the laws and ordinances of the city. All regular police shall be appointed by the Mayor by and with the consent of the City Council and special police officers may, in like manner, be appointed, but when at the request of persons for private purposes, no compensation shall be allowed them by the city. In cases of emergency, the Mayor shall have full power to appoint police officers for temporary purposes, without the consent of the City Council being required. The Mayor shall have power to remove any police officer whenever, in his or her opinion, the interests of the city requires such removal. All police officers so appointed shall hold office for the time specified in the order of their appointment, not extending beyond the termination of the current municipal year, and shall be paid such salary or compensation as the City Council may determine.
