7-5-1: PEDESTRIANS AND CROSSWALKS:
   A.   Crosswalk Defined: A CROSSWALK shall be defined as an eight foot (8') lane of pedestrian travel, located at the corner of an intersection of two (2) or more roadways, and projecting across a single roadway by a route at right angles to the edge of the street pavement or by the shortest route to the opposite edge of the street pavement; or any lane of pedestrian travel which has been marked by paint, signage, and/or crossing guards and projecting across a single roadway by a route at right angles to the edge of the roadway or by the shortest route to the opposite edge of the roadway.
   B.   Electronic Or Manual Traffic-Control Signals:
      1.   When electronic or manual traffic-control signals are not in place or not in operation, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway upon which the vehicle is traveling, or when the pedestrian is approaching so closely to the opposite half of roadway as to be in danger.
      2.   When electronic or manual traffic-control signals are in place, the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way by stopping to so yield according to the signal, allowing a pedestrian to cross the roadway within a crosswalk.
   B.   Pedestrian Responsibility: No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close that it is impossible for the driver to yield. Anytime vehicles are present, pedestrians shall cross the streets only within crosswalks.
   C.   Stopping Of Vehicles: Whenever any vehicle is stopped at a marked crosswalk or at any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway, the driver of any other vehicle approaching from the rear shall not overtake and pass such stopped vehicle.
   D.   School Zone Consideration: In any conviction for a violation of this section, the court shall consider whether or not the location of the offense is within or outside of a school zone, and whether or not children are present, in the setting of the penalty.
