139.11 SERGEANT.
   (a)   There is hereby created the rank of Sergeant of police who shall be appointed by the Mayor with the approval of Council from the rank of regular police officers of the Village and who shall be an elector of the Village of McDonald. The sergeant shall serve a six month probationary period.
   (b)   The Sergeant of police shall be in charge of the Police Department in the absence of the Chief of Police and Lieutenant. He or she shall have the powers conferred by laws upon the Chief of Police, Police Lieutenant, and police officers in all Villages in the State. In the absence of the Chief of Police and the Lieutenants, the Sergeant shall be responsible for duties assigned to him/her by the Chief of Police which include, but are not limited to:
      (1)   To assign members of the Police Department their jobs and any special detail required of them in emergencies during their shifts.
      (2)   To be a first-line supervisor during his or her shift, directing other members of the police department to their assigned tasks or duties, as directed by the Chief of Police or Lieutenant.
      (3)   To report to the Chief of Police or Lieutenant of Police from time to time, as may be required of him or her.
