§ 52.020 DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this subchapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   BOD or BIOCHEMICAL OXYGEN DEMAND. The quantity of oxygen utilized in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory procedure in five days at 20°C, expressed in milligrams per liter.
   BUILDING SEWER. The extension from the building drain to the public sewer or other place of disposal.
   NATURAL OUTLET. Any watercourse, dry run, lake or any area that drains into any of such areas.
   NH3, NH3-N (AMMONIA). The portion of nitrogen in the form of protein or intermediate decomposition products which is determined by standard laboratory procedures for analysis of ammonia nitrogen, expressed in milligrams per liter (mg/l).
   pH. The logarithm of the reciprocal of the weight of hydrogen ions in grams per liter of solution and is a measurement of the intensity of the acidity or alkalinity of the solution.
   PRIVY. Any area used for the act of human defecation and for the storage of the products of this act that is not connected to an approved method of disposal for the waste. This area may include the building housing such an area or may include only the ground around such an area.
   PUBLIC SEWER. A sewer in which all owners of abutting properties have equal rights and which public authority controls.
   SANITARY SEWER. A sewer which carries wastes and to which storm waters, surface waters and ground waters are not intentionally admitted.
   SLUG. Excessive concentration; any discharge of water, sewage or industrial waste which in concentration of any given constituent or in quantity of flow exceeds for any period of duration longer than 15 minutes more than five times the average 24-hour concentration or flows during normal operation.
   STORM SEWER. A sewer that carries storm waters and surface waters and drainage, but excludes sewage and industrial wastes, other than unpolluted cooling water.
   SUPERINTENDENT. The Superintendent of the city water pollution control plant.
   SUSPENDED SOLIDS (SS). Solids that either float on the surface of or are in suspension in water, sewage or other liquids, and which are removable by laboratory filtering.
   USER. Any person, firm or company that discharges wastes of any kind into the city’s sanitary sewer system.
