9-1-7: SMOKE DETECTORS REQUIRED IN RENTAL UNITS:
   A.   Definition: The term "smoke detector" shall mean a device which detects particles or products of combustion, other than heat, approved by Underwriter's Laboratory, Inc., or other comparable testing firm.
   B.   Applicability Of Section: Any building, public or private, other than single-family dwelling units constructed after the effective date of this section, shall be subject to the rules and regulations contained in this section. This includes, but is not limited by reason of enumeration to, the following: multiple-family dwellings, motels, hotels, nursing homes, convalescent homes, rooming houses, condominiums, apartments, commercial establishments, and public buildings of every type.
   C.   Installation Required; Alternative:
      1.   The installation of a minimum of one smoke detector per affected building is hereby required for all buildings constructed subsequent to the effective date of this section.
      2.   As an alternative to a smoke detector, a fire detection system may be installed. No fire detection system shall be installed unless a permit is issued therefor by the building inspector.
   D.   Occupancy Prohibited Without Smoke Detector: It shall be unlawful for any person to occupy a building required under this section to have a smoke detector, or let the same to another for occupancy, which does not have installed and in operating condition, a smoke detector on each level of said building.
   E.   Installation In Hallways: In buildings defined in subsection B of this section, where a common hallway is used, smoke detectors shall be spaced not more than twenty five feet (25') apart in such hallway.
   F.   Number Of Smoke Detectors: At least one smoke detector shall be installed per unit. A "unit" is herein defined as a separate and distinct dwelling unit in a multi-family dwelling and as a separate and distinct public or commercial establishment in a structure housing more than one public or commercial establishment.
   G.   Mounting On Wall Or Ceiling: Each required smoke detector shall be mounted on the ceiling, or a wall not more than twelve inches (12") from the ceiling.
   H.   Maintenance: It shall be the responsibility of the owner of each affected building covered by this section to maintain all smoke detectors or fire detectors in good working order. (1985 Code § 4-43)
