Every driver of a taxicab, immediately after the termination of any hiring or employment, shall carefully search such taxicab for any property lost or left therein, and any such property, unless sooner claimed or delivered to the owner, shall be taken to the nearest police station and deposited with the officer in charge within 24 hours after the finding thereof. The officer in charge of the station to which the report shall be made shall forward a written notice to the police property officer with brief particulars and a description of the property. The provisions of this section shall not apply to any profit or nonprofit corporation composed of members engaged in regular taxicab business, having a regularly established lost and found department; in which case such property shall be kept subject to the call of the owner for a period of not less than 30 days, at the termination of the period to be disposed of in accordance with law.
