In the event a person becomes entitled to a pension or other benefit payable by the retirement system as a result of an accident or injury caused by the act of a third party, the city shall be subrogated to the rights of the said person against such third party to the extent of the city financed benefits to which the retirement system pays or becomes liable to pay.
