905.06 AWNINGS AND SIGNBOARDS OVER SIDEWALKS.
   No owner or occupant of any house, store or other building shall erect or construct, or cause or permit to be erected or constructed, or permit to remain erected or constructed, any awning, signboard or other device, structure or thing in front of any such house, store or building on any street in the City that does not comply with the following specifications and rules:
(a)   Definitions.
(1)    "Collapsible awning" means any roof-like structure, attached to a building and projecting over a thoroughfare, so constructed and erected as to permit its being rolled up or folded back to a position flat against the building.
(2)    "Fixed awning" means any rigid roof-like structure, other than a marquee, attached to a building in an immovable position and projecting over a thoroughfare.
(3)    "Canopy" means any roof-like structure having a rigid frame erected over an entrance and attached to such building in such a manner as to not become an integral part thereof.
(4)    "Marquee" means a roof-like structure having a rigid frame and erected over a thoroughfare and attached to a building as a rigid part of the building or attached to the building in a safe manner.
(b)    Required Materials. 
(1)    Collapsible awning. A collapsible awning shall be made of canvas or nonferrous metal on approved metal frames attached to a building and may project over the sidewalk not exceeding eight feet, provided:
A.    Such awnings are supported by approved metal framework securely attached to such building in such a manner as to be at all times safe and self-supporting;
B.    Each part of such awning shall be at least seven and one-half feet above the sidewalk at all points and not nearer than twenty-four inches to the street curb lines, projected vertically upward.
(2)    Fixed awning. Fixed awnings shall be constructed of nonferrous metals on approved metal frames attached to a building and may project over the sidewalk not exceeding eight feet, provided:
A.   Such awnings are supported by approved metal framework securely attached to such building in such a manner as to be at all times safe and self-supporting;
B.    Each part of such awning shall be at least eight feet above the sidewalk at all points and not nearer than twenty-four inches to the street curb line, projected vertically upward.
(3)    Canopy. A canopy shall be made of canvas on a suitable framework and may extend from an entrance to a building to within eighteen inches of the curb. Where they cross the sidewalk, openings shall be provided for the use of the public on such sidewalk.
(4)    Marquee. A marquee shall be made of nonferrous metals or glass safely supported and attached to the building. Drainage must be provided.
A.    Such marquees shall be supported by approved metal framework securely attached to such building in such a manner as to be at all times safe and self -supporting.
B.   Each part of such marquee shall be at least ten feet above the sidewalk at all points and not nearer than twenty-four inches to the street curb line, projected vertically upward.
(c)    General.
(1)    No posts or uprights shall be permitted for any of the above fixtures from the sidewalk or street, with the exception of the canopy, which shall be temporary. Under no condition shall the width of any of the above fixtures be allowed to come closer than two feet from the curb line, with the exception of the canopy, which is eighteen inches.
(2)    No advertising is to be displayed on the awnings or fixtures. Only the name of the business or name of the owner may be displayed, except that theater marquees may advertise current activities.
