8-5-1: INSTALLATION; STANDARDS; DAMAGE AND REPLACEMENT:
   A.   Mailboxes and their installation shall conform to the specifications of the United States postal service. The mailbox shall be mounted such that the door is six inches (6") to eight inches (8") from the front edge of the curb or thirty six inches (36") from the edge of pavement on rural roads, forty one (41) to forty five inches (45") high from the road surface to the floor of the mailbox and located on the side of the street as specified by the local post office.
   B.   Address numbers must be inscribed in contrasting color in neat letters and numerals not less than one inch (1") high on the side of the box visible to the carrier's regular approach, or in the door if boxes are grouped.
   C.   It is recommended that mailboxes conform to the "U.S. mail" and "approved by the postmaster general" standards and that they be installed on a four inch by four inch (4" x 4") wood post or no greater than a two inch (2") diameter standard strength steel pipe.
   D.   The local postmaster may approve a curbside mailbox constructed by a customer who, for aesthetic or other reasons, does not want to use an approved manufactured box. The custom built box must generally meet the same standards as approved manufactured boxes for flag, size, strength and quality of construction. If masonry mailbox stands are installed no portion of the masonry may be closer than eight inches (8") from the back of the curb.
   E.   If any mailbox is damaged or knocked down by the village's snow removal or other village maintenance activities, the village will replace the mailbox with a standard mailbox and post as described in subsection C of this section. If a decorator type mailbox and/or post, as described in subsection D of this section, is damaged and requires replacement, the village will reimburse the resident for the cost of materials for the standard type mailbox and post and it shall be the responsibility of the resident to purchase and install the decorative mailbox and/or post. The village's liability per occurrence is limited to the actual cost of a standard mailbox as set out above or a cash settlement not to exceed fifty dollars ($50.00). (Res. 384-07, 5-15-2007)
