All motor vehicles abandoned or illegally parked on the public streets and ways of the city, or parked in violation of §§ 72.01 through 72.10, except in violation of § 72.05, shall be removed at the direction of the Police Department by a city wrecker or by contract wrecker employed by the Chief of Police and shall be placed in custody of city tow lots or such other impound area designated by the Chief of Police.
