When not redeemed by the owner, agent or caretaker, a dog or cat that has been impounded must be scanned for a microchip. If a microchip is present, the registered owner, caretaker, or microchip purchaser must be notified and a record kept of the notification. After contact has been made or attempted, dogs or cats or other animals shall be made available to a licensed humane society, animal shelter, or rescue group. If no placement is available, it shall be humanely dispatched pursuant to the Humane Euthanasia in Animal Shelters Act, 510 ILCS 72/1 et seq.
