Four members of the Police Department, other than the Chief of Police, who shall have served in the Department at least two years, may be assigned to perform detective duties by the Chief of Police and Mayor. The members acting as Detectives of the Department shall perform detective duties in the accepted sense of such designation, except in those circumstances when they may be reassigned to regular police duties, at the discretion of the Mayor and the Chief of Police, and shall be known as the Detective Bureau.
The Mayor and Chief of Police, in the event of an emergency, shall have the authority to temporarily assign assistants to the Detectives from members of the Police Department who have served more than two years, but while so assigned such assistants shall not be entitled to additional compensation.
