§ 37.21 LATERAL ENTRY.
   (A)   Qualifications and requirements.
      (1)   A currently employed police officer, who can provide certification that he or she has met the training requirements (basic training) through the Department of Criminal Justice Training, may apply as a candidate for screening and testing and appointment to the lateral entry eligibility list. The following conditions must be met:
         (a)   The candidate must have two years of experience as a sworn police officer and must be in good standing with his or her current agency.
         (b)   Previous service can be applied to the length of service requirements for considerations of promotions in the Police Department provided that probationary requirements have been met.
         (c)   Previous service will not be recognized for purposes of seniority or length of service in the city Police Department.
         (d)   The following procedures will be followed:
            1.   The candidate must apply using a City of Ludlow application and provide copies of high school diploma, birth certificate, military papers (if applicable) and a current, unencumbered driver’s license. Candidates will also provide certificates, awards and diplomas relating to training and/or recognition awards.
            2.   The Police Department will check credentials and conduct a preliminary interview. A background investigation will be conducted.
   (B)   Eligibility list. The lateral entry eligibility list may be utilized ahead of the original civil service appointment list when there is a need to fill positions requiring trained personnel and when the original list does not contain names of available trained personnel and/or when the Mayor determines that there is an emergency need for trained personnel.
   (C)   Examination. An officer entering under this procedure must submit to examination by the Civil Service Commission as a condition to being classified as a civil service employee.
