§ 10.06 DEFINITIONS.
   (A)   General rule. Words and phrases shall be taken in their plain, or ordinary and usual sense. However, technical words and phrases having a peculiar and appropriate meaning in law shall be understood according to their technical import.
   (B)   For the purpose of this Code, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   AND. May be read or, and or may be read and if the sense requires.
   BOARD OF HEALTH. The Louisville/Jefferson County Board of Health.
   CODE, THIS CODE OF ORDINANCES, or THIS CODE. This Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government Code as modified by amendment, revision, and adoption of new titles, chapters, or sections.
   COMPANY. May extend and be applied to any corporation, company, person, partnership, joint stock company, or association.

   CORPORATION. May extend and be applied to any corporation, company, partnership, joint stock company, or association.

   COUNTY. Jefferson County, Kentucky.
   DIRECTORS. When applied to corporations, includes managers or trustees.

   KEEPER or PROPRIETOR. Includes all persons, whether acting by themselves or as a servant, agent, or employee.
   KRS or REVISED STATUTES. Refers to the Kentucky Revised Statutes.
   LAND or REAL ESTATE. Includes lands, tenements, and hereditaments and all rights thereto and interest therein, other than a chattel interest.

   LOUISVILLE METRO. Jefferson County, Kentucky.
   MAY. The act referred to is permissive.
   METRO COUNCIL or COUNCIL. The legislative body of the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government.
   METRO GOVERNMENT. Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government.
   MINOR. Persons of the age of 18 years are of the age of majority for all purposes in this Commonwealth except for the purchase of alcoholic beverages and for purposes of care and treatment of handicapped children, for which 21 years is the age of majority, anything to the contrary notwithstanding.

   MONTH. A calendar month.
   MUNICIPAL CORPORATION or MUNICIPALITY. When used in this Code shall denote the Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government irrespective of its population or legal classification.
   OATH. Includes affirmation in all cases in which an affirmation may be substituted for an oath.

   OFFICER, OFFICE, EMPLOYEE, COMMISSION or DEPARTMENT. An officer, office, employee, commission, or department of this Metro Government unless the context clearly requires otherwise.
   OWNER. When applied to property, includes any part owner, joint owner, or tenant in common of the whole or part of such property. When applied to any animal, means any person having a property interest in such animal.

   PERSON. Extends to and includes person, persons, firm, corporation, co-partnership, trustee, lessee, or receiver. Whenever used in any clause prescribing and imposing a penalty, the terms PERSON or WHOEVER as applied to any unincorporated entity shall mean the partners or members thereof, and as applied to corporations, the officers or agents thereof.
   PERSONAL PROPERTY. Includes all property except real.
   PRECEDING or FOLLOWING. Next before or next after, respectively.
   PREMISES. As applied to property, includes land and buildings.
   PROPERTY. Includes real, personal, mixed estates and interests.
   PUBLIC AUTHORITY. Extends to and includes the Jefferson County Board of Education, Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government, the Metro Council members, the State of Kentucky, the United States of America, and any duly authorized public official.
   PUBLIC PLACE. Includes any street, sidewalk, park, cemetery, school yard, body of water or watercourse, public conveyance, or any other place for the sale of merchandise, public accommodation, or amusement.
   REAL PROPERTY. Includes land, tenements, and hereditaments.
   SHALL. The act referred to is mandatory.
   SIDEWALK. That portion of the street between the curb line and the adjacent property line intended for the use of pedestrians.
   SIGNATURE or SUBSCRIPTION. Includes a mark when the person cannot write.
   STATE. The State of Kentucky.
   STATE FUNDS or PUBLIC FUNDS. Sums actually received in cash or negotiable instruments from all sources unless otherwise described by any state agency, state-owned corporation, university, department, cabinet, fiduciary for the benefit of any form of state organization, authority, board, bureau, interstate compact, commission, committee, conference, council, office, or any other form of organization whether or not the money has ever been paid into the treasury and whether or not the money is still in the treasury if the money is controlled by any form of state organization, except for those funds the management of which is to be reported to the legislative research commission pursuant to KRS 42.600, 42.605, and 42.615.
   STREET. Includes alleys, avenues, boulevards, lanes, roads, highways, viaducts, and all other public thoroughfares within the metropolitan area.
   SUBCHAPTER. A division of a chapter, designated in this Code by a heading in the chapter analysis and a capitalized heading in the body of the chapter, setting apart a group of sections related by the subject matter of the heading. Not all chapters have subchapters.
   SWORN. Includes affirmed in all cases in which an affirmation may be substituted for an oath.

   TENANT or OCCUPANT. As applied to premises, includes any person holding a written or oral lease, or who actually occupies the whole or any part of such premises, alone or with others.
   WRITTEN. Any representation of words, letters, or figures, whether by printing or otherwise.
   YEAR. A calendar year, unless otherwise expressed; equivalent to the words YEAR OF OUR LORD.
