(A) It shall be the duty of every member of the police department to conduct themselves in a proper and law abiding manner and to avoid the use of unnecessary force. Officers shall not behave in any manner which is a discredit to the police department or in any way be guilty of conduct unbecoming a police officer. Officers shall promptly obey all lawful orders from their superiors and maintain their uniform, equipment and person in a neat and orderly condition. Officers shall pay their debts promptly and not be seen in the company of or associated with persons of doubtful or questionable character. Officers shall obey and abide by the laws and regulations set forth by the chief of police and the village board of trustees. In the performance of their duty, officers must maintain decorum and attention, command of temper, patience and discretion. Officers must at all times refrain from harsh, violent, coarse, profane or insolent language and at the same time, when required, act with firmness and sufficient energy to perform their duty. Drinking intoxicating liquor while on duty by any member of the police department is expressly forbidden, except when the consumption is in the line of duty while participating in a police related investigation.
(B) The chief of police shall have the power to suspend any member of the police department from duty for a period not to exceed 5 days for violations of this chapter, the rules and regulations of the police department, orders or other directives.
(C) In lieu of suspending any member of the police department, the chief of police may submit written charges against a member of the police department to the board of police commissioners of the village. Rules governing the suspension or the placing of written charges before the board of police commissioners are governed by the Illinois Compiled Statutes.
