1. Introduction. To create a uniform marking system for identifying the special characteristics of the private fire hydrants within the city. The marking system shall be easily understandable.
2. Purpose. To identify for all Fire Department personnel the following fire hydrant characteristics:
A. Responsible owner, public or private;
B. If the fire hydrant is boosted by a fire pump or not;
C. To determine which fire hydrants shall or shall not be used under fire incident conditions; and
D. To evaluate the characteristics and necessary action needed for limited water source fire hydrants.
3. Definition and usage. For the purpose of this attachment, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
BOOSTED FIRE HYDRANT. A private hydrant by the above definition, that’s supply pressure is raised from a fire pump that is operated as part of the fire suppression system on the private property.
(1) The property owner is responsible for repairs and painting.
(2) Color for the hydrant will be red barrel with white caps.
LIMITED WATER SUPPLY HYDRANT. A private hydrant by the above definition, in which the water supply is established from a public water main six inches or smaller in diameter and/or supplied by a static water source (pond, lake, elevated, above ground or below ground tanks and the like).
(1) The property owner is responsible for repairs and painting.
(2) Color for the hydrant will be red barrel with yellow caps.
PRIVATE FIRE HYDRANT. A fire hydrant that is located on private property and is connected to a public water main by a water meter for billing purposes and/or anti-backflow device by a pipe larger than six inch in diameter.
PUBLIC FIRE HYDRANT. Any un-metered fire hydrant that is maintained primarily by the Water Department and is operational directly on a city owned water main.
(1) The property owner is responsible for repairs and painting;
(2) Color for the hydrant will be red barrel with green caps.
YARD FIRE HYDRANT. A fire hydrant that is not equipped with a large diameter steamer connection for fire apparatus. Is equipped with only two and one-half-inch thread connections or smaller.
(1) The property owner is responsible for repairs and painting.
(2) These hydrants are to be used only to help boost the fire suppression system.
(3) Color for the hydrant will be solid red barrel and caps.
