1. Introduction. To create a uniform marking system for identifying the special characteristics of the public fire hydrants within the city. The marking system shall be easily understandable.
2. Purpose. To identify for all Fire Department personnel the following fire hydrant characteristics:
A. Responsible owner, public or private;
B. To determine which fire hydrants shall or shall not be used under fire incident conditions;
and
C. To evaluate the characteristics and necessary action needed for limited water source fire hydrants.
3. Definition and usage. For the purpose of this attachment, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
PRIVATE FIRE HYDRANT. A fire hydrant that is located on private property and is connected to a public water main by a water meter for billing purposes and/or anti-backflow device by a pipe larger than six inches in diameter.
PUBLIC FIRE HYDRANT. Any un-metered fire hydrant that is maintained primarily by Water Department and is operational directly on a city owned water main.
4. Color coding. Color coding for hydrants will be:
(1) All barrels to be painted with a reflective type bright yellow paint.
(2) The tops and nozzle caps shall be painted with the flowing capacity - indicating color scheme to provide simplicity and consistency with colors used in signal work for safety, danger and intermediate condition.
(3) For rapid identification at night, the top of the hydrant and caps shall be marked with a reflective-type material.
(4) The following codes will be used to mark the top and caps of the hydrant.
Class AA (1,500 gpm or greater) | Light blue |
