All original appointments shall be for a probational period of six months. Continuance in service shall be dependent upon the conduct of the appointee and his fitness for the performance of the duties to which he is assigned as indicated by the quality of his work and the reports and recommendations of his superior officers. If, during the said six months the appointee proves unfit, he will be dismissed from the service by the Mayor and shall not be entitled to appeal such dismissal.
