(A) All hydrants and water mains shall be installed and maintained as set forth in the 1995 edition of N.F.P.A. Standard No. 24. The Fire Prevention Chief in determining location and spacing of hydrants shall use 675 I.A.C. 22-2.2 Appendix III-B as a guide.
(B) The City of Lawrence Fire Department prior to construction of any Class 1 buildings shall approve the proposed location of hydrants to supply the required fire flow.
(C) Whenever the provisions of this chapter require the installation of a fire hydrant, whether on public or private property, the hydrant shall meet the following specifications:
(1) Dry top construction – the operating threads should be isolated from potentially corrosive environments, air and water, and should be lubricated with a good grade lubricant;
(2) National standard pentagon operating nut opened by turning counterclockwise;
(3) “Traffic” or “safety” model with breakaway flange and coupling assembly;
(4) Five and one-fourth inch valve opening;
(5) Two 2-1/2-inch hose nozzles with National Standard hose thread and one 5-1/4-pumper nozzle with National Standard hose thread;
(6) Nozzles are to be screwed into the upper section: O-ring sealed and have a pin or screw to prevent backing out;
(7) Upper valve plate is to be bronze;
(8) Main valve seat must be bronze-to-bronze thread;
(9) Hydrant will be equipped with a mechanical stop to prevent over-torquing the stem;
(10) Drain holes;
(11) Six-inch, mechanical joint base, or flange connection if used with PE;
(12) Epoxy coated lower valve plate and interior parts of hydrant shoe;
(13) Five-foot bury and option for six-foot bury;
(14) Lower barrel to be ductile iron, equivalent to Class 52 pipe; and
(15) Hydrants to be painted Lawrence Utilities, LLC “Safety Yellow” (Sherwin Williams) and the paint should be seven to eight mils in thickness with reflective tape or reflective white paint on bonnet flange.
(D) Nonfunctional hydrants shall not be located within 20 feet of any waterline easement, and shall be secured to prevent attempted usage.
(E) All fire hydrants shall be painted yellow.
(F) Only approved hydrant wrenches shall be used to open or close a fire hydrant.
