All family dwelling units within the limits of the City of Lawrence shall be equipped with a minimum of one functional, properly located, labeled and listed smoke detector as described in the National Fire Protection Association’s Standard 74. Within every dwelling unit, there shall be at least one smoke detector properly installed and in good working condition in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and at least one on each additional story of the family living unit including basements and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics.
