(A) After a minimum of ten years of honorable service to the City of Lawrence as a reserve police officer and at such time, having performed his or her requested and necessary duties as a reserve police officer and being in good standing, a reserve police officer shall be entitled to retire and to receive the honor and recognition herein provided. For purposes of calculating years of service under this subsection, only years of service as a Lawrence reserve police officer shall count towards the qualifying years of service.
(B) After a minimum of 20 years of service to the City of Lawrence as a merit police officer and at such time, having performed his or her requested and necessary duties as a merit police officer and being in good standing, a merit police officer shall be entitled to retire and to receive the honor and recognition herein provided.
(C) A police officer who desires to retire and who satisfies the established eligibility requirements listed in either divisions (A) or (B) above shall submit to the Chief of Police a request for retirement. Upon determination by the Chief of Police that the police officer has satisfied the established eligibility requirements, the police officer shall be granted retired status.
(D) Each retired police officer shall be provided, at the city's expense and within six months of the officer's last date of active service to the city, a “retired” badge and identification card, both of which shall evidence the police officer's retired status and the rank at which the officer retired. In addition, the retired officer also shall be given his or her service weapon. The retired police officer shall be required to pay the transfer fee applicable to the transfer of his or her service weapon. Such retired badge and identification card shall remain the property of the city, provide no authority to act as a police officer and must be returned to the city at any time upon the request of the Chief of Police and in his or her absolute discretion.
(E) Each retired police officer at all times shall provide, in writing, to the Chief of Police accurate and updated address, telephone number and such other contact information as may be requested by the Chief of Police.
