§ 1-2-5-1. DEFINITIONS.
   For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.
   (A)   BEREAVEMENT LEAVE. Leave granted to an employee upon the death of a family member without loss of pay.
   (B)   COURT AND JURY LEAVE. Leave granted to an employee either to serve on a jury or as a subpoenaed witness but not as a litigant.
   (C)   EMPLOYEE. Any person occupying a paid position with the City of Lawrence for which compensation is set on either an hourly or annual basis.
   (D)   EMPLOYEE TRAVEL EXPENSES. Expenses incurred by an employee when traveling to perform assigned duties, including approved training, with pay, on behalf of the municipal government.
   (E)   EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Leave granted to an employee for an extended period of time for extenuating, unusual or uncontrollable circumstances.
   (F)   FULL-TIME POSITION. Any position requiring an average performance of regularly scheduled service of 1,924 hours or more per year (average of 37 hours or more per week). FULL-TIME POSITIONS and any part-time position or positions designated by the Mayor are eligible for benefits.

   (G)   HOLIDAY LEAVE. Paid days off in recognition of religious, historical or social occurrences.
   (H)   LIMITED DUTY. The temporary assignment of a firefighter who is unable to perform his or her regular job assignment due to illness or injury as determined by a licensed physician approved by the City.
   (I)   MATERNITY LEAVE. Leave without pay granted to a pregnant employee in the late months of pregnancy and following the birth of the child to allow the employee to return to work without loss of seniority.
   (J)   MILITARY LEAVE. Time off without loss of pay allotted to employees to fulfill military obligations with the National Guard or one of the reserve components.
   (K)   OPERATIONS DIVISION SWORN POLICE OFFICER. Any full-time police officer who is working a 51-hour average work week consisting of eight and one-half hours each day during a period of six days.
   (L)   PART-TIME. Any position requiring less than 37 hours per week of regularly scheduled service. PART-TIME positions are not eligible for benefits other than those mandated by local, state or federal law (e.g., worker’s compensation) and as provided pursuant to the definition of “full-time position” herein.

   (M)   PERMANENT POSITION. Any position which is considered a year-round position and not merely a temporary or seasonal employee.
   (N)   REGULAR POSITION. Any position which is considered a year-round position and not merely a temporary or seasonal employee.

   (O)   SEASONAL OR TEMPORARY EMPLOYEE. Any employee who works 25 weeks or less and who is hired into a position which is specifically designated within a particular department as a seasonal position and which was so communicated to the employee at the time of the employee’s hiring.
   (P)   SHIFT FIREFIGHTER. Any full-time firefighter who is working a 48-hour average work week.
   (Q)   SICK LEAVE. Any absence from duty which occurs as a result of:
      (1)   Illness or injury of the employee;
      (2)   Any situation where an employee’s presence might jeopardize the health of fellow workers; or
      (3)   Attendance by an employee upon a member of his or her immediate family whose illness or injury compels the presence of the employee.
