1-12-9: PATROL SERGEANT DUTIES:
The position of patrol sergeant is an inherently dangerous position. The patrol sergeant shall act under the direction of the chief of police. Part of the duties are to preserve the public peace, prevent crime, detect and arrest offenders, suppress riots, protect persons and property, remove nuisances existing in the public streets, roads and highways, enforce every law relating to the suppression of offenses, and perform all duties required of them by ordinance, resolution or the direction of the chief of police, mayor and city council. The duties enumerated in this section shall not act as a limitation of a patrol sergeant's statewide authority as otherwise provided by law.
Additional duties expected of a patrol sergeant are the supervision of patrol officers, train and maintain records of training each officer receives, schedule patrol shifts, days off, and court appearances of each officer. The patrol sergeant will also conduct evaluations of patrol officers and use those evaluations in assisting patrol officers to become better officers. The patrol sergeant will also handle any initial complaints on the officers. (Ord. 2006-30, 9-20-2006)
