The town police officers shall, at all times, have the duty of enforcing the traffic ordinances of the town and the traffic laws of the state, and to direct all traffic in conformance with such laws, and shall have the power and duty, in the event of fire or other emergency or to expedite traffic or to ensure safety, to direct traffic as conditions may require, notwithstanding any provisions of the state law or the ordinances of the town.
