It shall be unlawful for any person to erect or maintain any awning or other similar object in front of any building extending over the sidewalk, which has a clearance of less than seven feet above the level of any sidewalk, or which extends over the traveled portion of the street in front of the building to which it may be attached; provided, however, that, stationary awning arms shall be at least eight feet above the level of the sidewalk.
