249.27 PROBATION.
   (a)   Every employee shall be required, upon entering City service, to successfully complete a probationary period of 120 days, except police and fire employees. Police and fire employees shall serve a one-year probationary period.
   (b)   Supervisors shall use the probationary period to closely observe and evaluate the work and fitness of employees and to encourage adjustment to jobs and the City service. Supervisors shall recommend retention of only those employees who meet acceptable standards during the probationary period.
   (c)   A probationary period employee may be separated at any time during the second half of the probationary period when, in the judgment of the appointing authority, the employee’s fitness and/or quality of work are not such as to merit continuation in the job.
   (d)   (1)   All newly promoted employees, except police and fire employees, shall be subject to a ninety-calendar day probationary period. Newly promoted police and fire employees shall be subject to the following probationary periods:
            Police Department
            Patrolman to Sergeant 6 months
            Sergeant to Lieutenant 30 days
            Lieutenant to Chief 30 days
            Fire-fighter to Captain 6 months
            Captain to Assistant Chief 30 days
            Assistant Chief to Chief 30 days
      (2)   Such employees may be returned to his or her former position at his or her former rate of pay within the second half of the probationary period when, in the judgment of the appointing authority, the employee has failed to adequately perform the job requirements.
