§ 30.38 BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY.
   (A)   The Board of Public Works and Safety shall hire and/or appoint all city employees. The number being hired or appointed shall be controlled by ordinance, including utilities and Police and Fire Departments.
   (B)   Duties shall include: Public works as outlined in I.C. 36-1-12 as written and/or amended at times.
      (2)   PUBLIC WORKS means the construction, reconstruction, alteration, or renovation of a public building, airport facility, or other structure that is paid for out of a public fund or out of a special assessment. The term includes the construction, alteration, or repair of a highway, street, alley, sewer, drain, or other improvement that is paid for out of a public fund or out of a special assessment. The term also includes any public work leased by a political subdivision under a lease containing an option to purchase, including water utilities and/or stormwater and wastewater. The Public Works Projects Board may purchase or lease materials as provided in I.C. 5-22 as performed any public works by means of its own work force, without awarding a contract when estimated cost to be less than $250,000. Employees need to be capable of performing the job as stated in I.C. 36-1-12-3.
   (C)   The Board of Public Works and Safety shall handle the appointments or other actions and activities of police and/or volunteer firemen in accordance to Indiana Code and as may be recommended by chiefs in most situations; and shall work to ensure the equipment meets requirements and standards working with the Clerk-Treasurer and/or City Council.
